You have booked the resort. The flight lands at Phuket International (HKT). The gap between the jet bridge and your hotel lobby is where holidays often start with friction: long immigration lines, SIM counters, and taxi queues.
HKT is a resort airport, not a megahub — but peak season still stacks leisure traffic fast.
International terminal: Most foreign arrivals use the main international building. Contact gates (roughly gates 1–14 on airside maps) walk straight into the arrivals corridor. Remote stands use a short bus to the same hall — add 5–15 minutes before you even reach immigration.
Domestic terminal: A separate building a few minutes' walk away handles domestic flights. If your ticket continues on a domestic HKT leg, you clear international immigration first, collect bags if required, then walk or shuttle to domestic check-in. Immigration time is usually the risk, not the walk.
Arrivals level flow: Gate → immigration hall → baggage carousels (ground level) → customs → SIM/taxi concourse → curbside.
Most international arrivals follow this path:
Peak season stacks several wide-bodies within an hour. That is when the immigration hall becomes the bottleneck, not the terminal walk.
HKT follows flight banks, not clockwork. Use ranges for planning, not promises.
| Window (local time) | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| 08:00–12:00 | Morning banks from overnight long-hauls and regional feeders |
| 12:00–16:00 | Midday stacks — often the worst for resort charters landing together |
| 18:00–22:00 | Evening arrivals from Middle East and some European routes |
| 22:00–06:00 | Variable — quiet alone; slow when several flights stack |
High season: November–March, plus spikes at Christmas–New Year, Lunar New Year, and Songkran. Friday and Sunday often feel busiest for package holidays.
| Situation | Typical regular-queue feel |
|---|---|
| One flight alone, off-peak month | Often 15–25 minutes |
| Two or more wide-bodies together | 35–75+ minutes is common |
| Public holiday or CNY week | Plan 70–110+ minutes |
See HKT peak season planning for month-by-month detail.
HKT sees heavy banks from China, Russia, Australia, India, and Europe between November and March.
VOA passengers: Complete the government Visa on Arrival desk first. Fast-track greeters meet after mandatory steps as on your voucher — not instead of them.
Licensed fast track meet-and-assist routes you through priority handling where airport operations allow. It does not replace visas, VOA fees, or officer decisions.
Carousel numbers appear on screens in the ground-level baggage hall directly after immigration. HKT runs several belts side by side; golf bags and oversized items may go to a separate counter.
ATMs dispensing Thai baht sit in the international arrivals hall after customs and near the exit doors — look for SCB, Krung Thai, Bangkok Bank, and Krungsri machines along the concourse. Additional ATMs operate airside before immigration if you need cash immediately.
Exchange booths (Super Rich, Kasikorn, and airport counters) line the arrivals corridor with posted rates and a spread. Inform your home bank you are travelling to reduce card blocks.
For a week on the beach, many travellers withdraw baht once and use cards at larger resorts — but official taxis and some vendors still prefer cash.
AIS, True, and dtac operate branded kiosks in the international arrivals concourse after passport control, before the taxi rank. Passport registration is required by law; staff activate 7–30 day tourist packs on the spot.
See our Thai SIM at HKT guide for plan comparisons.
Road times from HKT vary with traffic — these are realistic planning ranges, not guarantees:
| Destination | Typical drive from HKT |
|---|---|
| Patong | 45–75 min |
| Kata / Karon | 50–80 min |
| Kamala | 35–55 min |
| Phuket Town | 35–50 min |
| Bang Tao / Laguna | 30–45 min |
| Rawai / Nai Harn | 55–90 min |
Add buffer after stacked arrivals or evening peak traffic. Tell your driver wheels-down time, not an optimistic immigration guess.
Getting there:
Avoid informal drivers inside the terminal promising flat rates. Use official queues or apps.
Some itineraries land international and continue on a domestic flight from HKT. Buildings are separate; walking or a short connection applies.
If your connection is tight, immigration time is usually the risk. Fast track on arrival can protect the domestic check-in window. See connecting at HKT.
Your e-voucher lists the meet point, time window, greeter identification, and contact channel — usually in or just past the international arrivals hall. Screenshot the PDF before you leave Wi-Fi coverage.
Typical flow: greeter verifies booking → escort toward priority immigration where permitted → baggage monitors → exit toward taxi or pre-booked transfer. Remote stands add a bus leg; greeters track flights but cannot help if you exit via the wrong door.
FastTrack Phuket is Phuket-focused and books fast track at BKK, DMK, HKT, CNX, and USM — select the airport on your ticket at checkout. Reserve at least 24 hours ahead in high season.
Pro tip: If you land between 10:00 and 14:00 in peak season, assume immigration is the slowest step. Book fast track or pad your transfer pickup by 45 minutes.
