Phuket International arrivals: what to expect at HKT
You have booked the resort. The flight lands at Phuket International (HKT). The gap between the jet bridge and your hotel lobby is where holidays often start with friction: long immigration lines, SIM counters, and taxi queues.
Terminal layout at HKT
HKT is a resort airport, not a megahub — but peak season still stacks leisure traffic fast.
International terminal: Most foreign arrivals use the main international building. Contact gates (roughly gates 1–14 on airside maps) walk straight into the arrivals corridor. Remote stands use a short bus to the same hall — add 5–15 minutes before you even reach immigration.
Domestic terminal: A separate building a few minutes' walk away handles domestic flights. If your ticket continues on a domestic HKT leg, you clear international immigration first, collect bags if required, then walk or shuttle to domestic check-in. Immigration time is usually the risk, not the walk.
Arrivals level flow: Gate → immigration hall → baggage carousels (ground level) → customs → SIM/taxi concourse → curbside.
After the plane doors open
Most international arrivals follow this path:

Peak season stacks several wide-bodies within an hour. That is when the immigration hall becomes the bottleneck, not the terminal walk.

HKT follows flight banks, not clockwork. Use ranges for planning, not promises.

Immigration queues at HKT
HKT sees heavy banks from China, Russia, Australia, India, and Europe between November and March.

Baggage and customs
Carousel numbers appear on screens in the ground-level baggage hall directly after immigration. HKT runs several belts side by side; golf bags and oversized items may go to a separate counter.

Money: ATMs and exchange
ATMs dispensing Thai baht sit in the international arrivals hall after customs and near the exit doors — look for SCB, Krung Thai, Bangkok Bank, and Krungsri machines along the concourse. Additional ATMs operate airside before immigration if you need cash immediately.
Exchange booths (Super Rich, Kasikorn, and airport counters) line the arrivals corridor with posted rates and a spread. Inform your home bank you are travelling to reduce card blocks.
For a week on the beach, many travellers withdraw baht once and use cards at larger resorts — but official taxis and some vendors still prefer cash.
SIM cards and Wi-Fi
AIS, True, and dtac operate branded kiosks in the international arrivals concourse after passport control, before the taxi rank. Passport registration is required by law; staff activate 7–30 day tourist packs on the spot.

- 🚐 Grab — works on much of Phuket; confirm the HKT pickup pin in-app
- 🚐 Shared minivans — budget option with extra stops
Avoid informal drivers inside the terminal promising flat rates. Use official queues or apps.
International vs domestic terminal
Some itineraries land international and continue on a domestic flight from HKT. Buildings are separate; walking or a short connection applies.

Typical flow: greeter verifies booking → escort toward priority immigration where permitted → baggage monitors → exit toward taxi or pre-booked transfer. Remote stands add a bus leg; greeters track flights but cannot help if you exit via the wrong door.
